A complex woman
There can be an incredible enthusiasm to explain who the woman of Revelation 12 represents. Some, including myself, may wish to place an all-encompassing interpretation upon her. I find myself thwarted in that attempt by the breadth of her experiences, and that is the background behind much of what I have put before.
Here are a number of her traits and experiences as given us by Revelation 12.
- Majestic appearance
- Endowed with motherhood
- Messiah came from her
- The church also came from her
- She had very powerful enemies
- Not a warrior
- Time of running/flying even from her enemies
- She had help
- Some was prepared ahead of time
- Some came just in time
Beauty, majesty and motherhood are often placed in vulnerable packages
The traits that she had are not painted as things she reached out and took. Her roles, her majesty, her position, her abilities are all evident. She clearly was designed to give life and to be marked by some of the best things in creation.
Standing against these best things, against the things that God designed was Satan and his minions. Powerful they were and they were bent upon the destruction of the good this woman possesses.
God may have given her vulnerability, but he also made a way for her to be protected from that which would harm her.
Maybe you have powerful enemies. Perhaps you have had to go on the run from those things which would destroy you. God will give the help he knows that you need. It may be uncomfortable in the running and may look desperate at times, but that’s okay. The way a thing looks is often far different than the way a thing is.
A spiteful force
So there is another force we see in the world. We listed some of the woman’s traits. Let’s now list some of the dragon’s traits.
- Started off in heaven
- Fought a great angelic battle in the heavens
- Did not win that battle and was thrown down
- He fell from a great height
- Leads humanity astray
- Tried to kill Jesus waiting for his birth
- After losing that battle tried to kill the woman and lost that battle too
- Many will align with him
- He was an accuser of men
