Jehoram’s situation
In summary, Jehoram was a man whose behavior was marked by evil. A significant source of these wicked tendencies came about by the bad marriage, the bad alliance with a daughter of the evil Ahab. Note this sinner’s shrinking kingdom.
God was keen to maintain a man on David’s throne, but he would not facilitate wickedness. Periodically, we will hear of beach erosion. Frequently, we are told of the flooding that will come about by climate change. Jehoram was experiencing kingdom erosion, and it was intimately tied to ungodliness.
Our behavior matters
Do you have any sense that doing things your way rather than God’s is going to go well? Many people do. There is no shortage of those who do things they know will displease God. Most of the time this is not to spite God, but mostly to feed their pleasures. This may work but only does so for a short time. The result is soul erosion much like Jehoram’s kingdom eroded.
You should not expect God’s blessing in the midst of sinning.
I have had people come to me once the erosion has evoked great distress. When we wade carefully into their life choices sometimes I see sadness and repentance. I have been occasionally encouraged by these little convictions, but so frequently no change is made. The party goes right back to their own ways. Erosion continues and opportunity is lost.
